It’s been announced that Juliet Stevenson and Ria Zmitrowicz are to star in the world premiere of Robert Icke’s new play THE DOCTOR at the Almeida Theatre this August.
‘Very freely adapted’ from Arthur Schnitzler’s 1912 play PROFESSOR BERNHARDI, Robert Icke’s THE DOCTOR will run at the Islington venue from 20th August to 28th September. THE DOCTOR will mark Icke’s final production as an associate director of the Almeida Theatre following acclaimed productions there including THE WILD DUCK, HAMLET, MARY STUART, ORESTEIA and 1984.
The production stars stage and screen legend Juliet Stevenson, who reunites with Icke having previously collaborated with him in MARY STUART and HAMLET. THE DOCTOR will also star Ria Zmitrowicz, who’s currently appearing at the Almeida Theatre in Rebecca Frecknell’s new staging of THREE SISTERS.
Robert Icke said: ‘THE DOCTOR will be my final show in my role as Almeida Associate Director. I’ve had a fantastic six years here, but it’s become impossible to give the building the attention it deserves alongside my other work for theatre and for the screen. I’m grateful to all my supportive and talented colleagues over that time, on stage and off, including so many wonderful actors, and to all of the wider Almeida team, some of whom I first met as an Almeida assistant director a decade ago. I look forward to returning in the future.’
Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold said: ‘Robert’s contribution to the Almeida is immeasurable. His emergence from our time working together at Headlong to international renown through his work for this theatre has been a privilege to be part of. He has been a friend and a visionary and we wish him well on the next stage of his artistic journey and look forward to him making other Almeida productions in the future.’
The production will feature design by Hildegard Bechtler, lighting by Natasha Chivers, sound by Tom Gibbons and casting by Julia Horan. Further casting is still to be announced.
THE DOCTOR runs at London’s Almeida Theatre from 12th August to 28th September with opening night scheduled for 20th August. Tickets go on general sale from 28th May.
