James McAvoy to Lead Jamie Lloyd’s West End Revival of CYRANO DE BERGERAC

Stage and screen star James McAvoy is to return to the West End in September in a new adaptation of CYRANO DE BERGERAC.

The new production of Edmond Rostand’s 1897 play, adapted by Martin Crimp (WHEN WE HAVE SUFFICIENTLY TORTURED EACH OTHER) is to be directed by Jamie Lloyd. CYRANO reunites the actor and director following previous West End collaborations on THE RULING CLASS and MACBETH at Trafalgar Studios.

McAvoy is best known to audiences for his work onscreen. Recent film credits include principal roles in the X-Men film series, Split and Glass. Forthcoming screen projects for the actor this year include IT Chapter Two and the BBC and HBO TV adaptation of His Dark Materials.

CYRANO DE BERGERAC will be the first production in a near year-long season of shows from the Jamie Lloyd Company, running at the Playhouse Theatre from November 2019 to August 2020. Further productions in the season will be formally announced in September 2019.

Lloyd’s recent work as a director includes curating the highly successful PINTER AT THE PINTER season and a new revival of Pinter’s BETRAYAL with Tom Hiddleston (which transfers to Broadway next month). Additionally, Lloyd’s new revival of EVITA begins previews this week at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre.

Lloyd said: “I can’t wait to get back into the rehearsal room with James McAvoy, who shares my commitment to accessibility in the arts. In a radical move for the West End, we will invite thousands of people who have never visited a theatre before to experience our work, performed by world-class actors, for free.”

Tickets for the new production of CYRANO will go on sale in September 2019, with producers committing to 15,000 free tickets across the season for first-time theatregoers and 15,000 £15 tickets for under 30s, key workers and those receiving job-seekers allowance.

CYRANO DE BERGERAC will feature set design by Soutra Gilmour, lighting design by Jon Clark, sound and composition by Ben and Max Ringham and fight direction by Kate Waters. Further casting for the production is still to-be-announced.

CYRANO DE BERGERAC runs at London’s Playhouse Theatre from 27th November until 29th February 2020. Tickets for the production will go on sale in September. Sign up here to be the first to know when tickets go on sale.
