It’s been announced that the hit new British musical SIX, currently run at the West End’s Arts Theatre, is to transfer to Broadway in 2020.
Based on the six wives of Henry VIII, yester’s announcement coincided with the 2nd anniversary of its very first performance, staged as a student production at a 100-seat venue at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
The New York production will play at New York’s 1000-seat Brooks Atkinson Theatre, currently home to the Broadway production of WAITRESS. Previews of SIX on Broadway will commence 13th February 2020, with an official opening night scheduled for 12th March 2020. Casting for the Broadway production is still to be announced.
Co-creators of SIX, Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss said: “We are UNBELIEVABLY excited about SIX coming to Broadway, like actually what is going on! We are so grateful that we get to share our show with an even wider audience, especially somewhere as iconic as the home of musical theatre – BROADWAY BABY!! The whole team across the pond are ridiculously amazing, and we can’t wait to share the show with you – NYC, thanks for having us!!!”
SIX, written by recent Cambridge University graduates Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, is a concert-style show featuring the six wives of Henry VIII. The show fuses modern pop and hip hop music to remix the story of historical heartbreak to 21st-century girl power. The show premiered as a student production at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017 before returning the following year as one of the main shows. Upon its permanent return to the West End in 2019, the show received five Olivier Award-nominations including Best New Musical.
SIX is directed by Lucy Moss and Jamie Armitage. It features choreography by Carrie-Anne Ingrouille, set by Emma Bailey, costumes by Gabriella Slade, lighting by Tim Deiling, sound by Paul Gatehouse and orchestrations by Tom Curran.
In addition to the West End and Broadway productions of SIX, the show is currently running at Chicago’s Shakespeare Theatre with further international dates in Boston, USA and Edmonton, Canada. The first UK tour of SIX is scheduled to commence from Guildford in October.
