Rebecca Frecknall to Direct Lydia Wilson in THE DUCHESS OF MALFI at Almeida Theatre

It’s been announced that Rebecca Frecknall is to direct a new revival of John Webster’s THE DUCHESS OF MALFI, opening at the Almeida Theatre this December.

Frecknall, best known for her Olivier Award-winning staging of Tennessee Williams’ SUMMER AND SMOKE and her new production of Chekov’s THREE SISTERS earlier this year, returns to the Almeida to direct Webster’s Jacobean revenge tragedy about the real-life fateful marriage of Giovanna d’Aragona.

THE DUCHESS OF MALFI is widely considered as one of the greatest tragedies of English renaissance drama, with recent productions at the RSC in 2018, at Shakespeare’s Globe in 2014 (starring Gemma Arterton) and at the Old Vic in 2012 (starring Eve Best).

Lydia Wilson returns to the Almeida following her Olivier nominated performance in KING CHARLES III to take on the title role. Wilson’s stage credits include Sarah Kane’s BLASTED at the Lyric Hammersmith, whilst her screen credits include About Time, Star Trek Beyond and Black Mirror.

THE DUCHESS OF MALFI features designs by Chloe Lamford. lighting designer by Jack Knowles, sound design by George Dennis and costumes design by Nicky Gillibrand.

THE DUCHESS OF MALFI runs at London’s Almeida Theatre from 2nd December 2019 to 18th January 2020, with press night scheduled for 10th December 2019. Tickets go on general sale from 26th September.
