A new concert version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard is to be performed at Alexandra Palace Theatre next month.
Featuring a socially-distanced cast and 24-piece orchestra, Sunset Boulevard will play for two performances on 25th October. The concerts star West End actress Mazz Murray in the iconic role of Norma Desmond. Murray’s previous stage credits include leading roles in Chicago, Mamma Mia! and We Will Rock You. Murray is joined in the leading roles by Kayi Ushe (Kinky Boots) as Joe Gillis, Laura Baldwin (Waitress) as Betty Schaefer, and Alex Bourne (Annie) as Max von Mayerling. Sharif Afifi (Artie Green), Chris Howell (Manfred / Sheldrake) and David Shaw-Parker (Cecil B Demille) round out the principal cast.
Also appearing in the concert are Jack Harrison-Cooper, Jordan Lee Davies, Chloe Hart, Aimee Hodnett, Claudia Kariuki, Sejal Keshwala, Anelisa Lamola, Evie Rose Lane, Tom Partridge, Cameron Sharp and Bleu Woodward.
Sunset Boulevard features direction by Alastair Knights and will be conducted by Alex Parker. Paul Smith serves as sound designer for the concerts.
Based on Billy Wilder’s Academy Award-winning film of the same name, Sunset Boulevard revolves around faded film star Norma Desmond, and her tragic romance with young screenwriter Joe Gillis. Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical, featuring book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton, premiered in London in 1993, and has since enjoyed several successful runs in the West End, on Broadway, and on various tours in the UK and the US. Most recently, the musical was revived for an acclaimed concert-run by the ENO at the London Coliseum in 2016. Starring Glenn Close as Norma Desmond, the production subsequently transferred to Broadway in 2017.
This concert version of Sunset Boulevard is presented by production company Quick Fantastic, who recently presented a sold-out concert version of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music at Holland Park Opera.
Tickets for Sunset Boulevard go on sale 25th September.
