Mike Bartlett’s Unicorn to debut in West End; Stephen Magnan, Nicola Walker and Erin Doherty star

The world premiere of Mike Bartlett’s new play, Unicorn, is to debut at the West End’s Garrick Theatre in February 2025.

The production is directed by James Macdonald (4.48 Psychosis, Infinite Lives), reuniting with Bartlett again following their collaborations on the Olivier Award-winning Cock at the Royal Court in 2009, and on Wild at Hampstead Theatre in 2016.

Bartlett’s previous stage credits include King Charles III and Albion, while he might best be known to audiences as the writer of smash hit TV show, Doctor Foster.

His new play, Unicorn, follows the story of Polly and Nick, a couple who seemingly have it all – careers, family, stability – yet find themselves seeking something elusive and unforeseen.

The play will unite The Split stars Nicola Walker (The Corn is Green) and Stephen Mangan (A Christmas Carol) as couple Polly and Nick. The Crown actress, Erin Doherty (Iphigenia in Splott), rounds out the trio to play Kate.

Speaking on his new play, Mike Bartlett said: “Kate Horton has championed Unicorn from the moment she read it, and I’m thrilled it will be the first play her new company produces. I’m so happy to get the chance to get to work with James Macdonald and Miriam Buether again, and with the incredible Nicola Walker, Stephen Mangan and Erin Doherty – all superb actors I’ve been a fan of for a long time.”

Director James Macdonald added: “I’m delighted to be embarking on my third play with Mike, after the joys of Cock and Wild! And to be doing so in the company of a peerless trio of actors – not to mention the most brilliant design team…”

The production team includes set and costume design by Miriam Buether (Stranger Things: The First Shadow, Prima Facie), lighting design by Natasha Chivers (Oedipus, The Hills of California), and sound design by Ian Dickinson (The Witches, 2:22: A Ghost Story).

The play opens at the Garrick Theatre in London’s West End from 4th February, 2025, running until 26th April.

Tickets are on sale now, with 10,000 tickets priced at £30 or under throughout the run.
